Will You Take the ‘Beautiful Mind’ Challenge?

free dancerWhat you consume into your consciousness matters. You reap what you sow.

If you want to create a fit and healthy strong physical body then it’s well known that you’ll need to watch what you consume.

Consuming the wrong foods keeps the body sluggish, overweight and can lead to a state of pain and illness.

The same thing applies with the mind. If you want to create a beautiful mind then you must become very aware of what you’re consuming mentally.

In order to create a beautiful inner environment you need to become the gatekeeper of your mind, only letting in good sources of nutrition.

If you are watching violent movies or TV shows, know that these have a negative impact on the state of your consciousness. Reading ‘trash’ magazines or ‘trash’ TV likewise are not good source of food for the mind.

Watching the news, which usually focuses on the drama and bad events in the world, can be a subtle source of stress and overwhelm.

Constant, heavy consumption of these kinds of things will likely lead to an agitated, restless and anxious mind.

What other ways are you indulging in unhealthy mental habits?

Become mindful of how the consuming of these kinds of ‘mental food’ affects your inner state.

If you want to  create a beautiful mind I strongly recommend going on a ‘diet’ from as many sources of these ‘bad mental foods’ as possible.

This will rapidly transform your mind and you can use your new found time to nurture and support new healthier ways of thinking and living.

I did a ‘mental diet’ like this when I was 19 years old. I don’t even know how to fully express the profound impact it had on my life. It made me hyper aware of what mattered most to me in life.

It made me realize what truly made me happy and how much of my life was just habitual behavior. It transformed me from the inside out in so many ways. It was truly life changing.

Don’t take my word for it though. Try it out yourself!

The Beautiful Mind Diet

I believe that in only two weeks you will be able to feel directly, in your own experience, an incredible difference in the state of your mind and the quality of your consciousness by going on what I call ‘the beautiful mind diet’.

Why don’t you try it out as an experiment? For the next two weeks dedicate yourself to cultivating a beautiful mind…just to see what happens. Make it your top priority.

Here are the 5 steps to the beautiful mind diet. Grab a pen and paper right now and lets get started. – Go on, grab that pen, what do you have to lose!

Step 1. Write a list of all the ‘bad mental food’ you know you have been consuming. Be ruthlessly honest with yourself. If you’re not sure about something just write it down anyway. Write your list quickly. Don’t take too much time to think or deliberate mentally about it. Just get it all down on paper.

Step 2. Beside each item on the list note down how much time you spend each week consuming that item.

Step 3. For each item on the list decide whether to cut it out completely for the next two weeks or whether to moderate your intake. Note down beside each item either the word ‘cut out’ if your cutting it out completely; or if moderating intake, write down exactly how much your going to allow yourself to consume each day/week.

For some items on your list it may be possible to simply change your relationship to that thing. For example, if you watch a lot of ‘trash TV’ you may choose to moderate your intake but also watch different TV like for instance may be an inspiring documentary about health and well-being.

If you have a friend who is often very negative instead of choosing not to see them, you might choose to simply not participate in negative talk with them. I have seen very powerful examples of people who simply sit in silence or just don’t participate in negative talk. The other (more negative) person quickly gets the message! The tune of the conversation changes quite naturally.

If you’re going to change your relationship to an item, write that down too. Your plan is taking shape.

Step 4. Now that you have freed up so much of your time you can introduce some new healthy and uplifting activities into your day!

If you really want to see an incredible transformation I suggest doing 15-20 minutes of meditation per day. If you don’t know how to meditate I’ve pasted a free meditation audio below that you can use to support you for the duration of your mental diet and beyond.

Other activities you might consider are going for walks, yoga, trying new hobbies, volunteer work, spending quality time with loved ones, writing in a diary, cloud/star watching, cooking healthy food, cleaning out the house, reading or watching inspiring/educational books and films. Maybe you can also schedule time for doing absolutely nothing too. Just sitting and being. Be creative!

Make a list of things you’re committed to doing in the next 2 weeks to cultivate a more beautiful mind.

Step 5. Now take action on all the healthy commitments you’ve made. Seriously….right now. Download the meditation audio.  Make a call to the local yoga center or community center, call your friends and make plans to meet. Plot in all your new activities into your diary (how fun will it be to schedule in to your diary ‘cloud watching’ for 2 hours!).

If there is anything you can’t take immediate action on, then plot down the action step in your organiser or stick it on a post-it note and stick it on your computer screen or somewhere else highly visible so you take action on it as soon as possible.

As a final suggested step, tell a friend what you’re doing (or better yet, enlist them to do the ‘beautiful mind diet’ with you) so that you feel absolutely committed to your 2-week transformation.

By the end of your ‘beautiful mind diet’ I believe you will experience for yourself, the reason why all wisdom traditions throughout time have recommended that we cultivate happiness from the inside out.

The truth is that when the mind is in its natural state, a feeling of deep peace and well-being naturally arises. That is where happiness comes from. No amount of re-arranging of external circumstances can bring about happiness if the mind is unfit and in turmoil.

If you truly give your all to this 2 weeks I know this will be the beginning of a whole new way of being and living.

Best of wishes and please let me know how it goes!

Love Melli

  1. I have for number of years now stopped watching TV especially the news, reading newspapers, listening to radio, involving myself in negitive conversations, pretty much decided to focus on doing, seeing, listening to things that make me feel good and become aware of what doesn’t (and then avoid). It feels amazing but the one thing that I have noticed is when I’m In a situation where it is “unavoidable” and I’m confronted with a negitive/fear based/tragic storey I’ve become super sensitive and experience such strong emotion where as before my “mindful switch” the same types of topics weren’t that big of a deal. Do you have any advice on how I could tackle this?So far my coping method when Im exposed is to mindfully breath through it till I can reach for a better feeling thought. Sometimes it can be a quick transition but other times it may take overnight to really rid the uneasy feeling. Many thanks, Belinda ox
